AZERBAIJANS MINISTER OF JUSTICE ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ANTI-CORRUPTION AUTHORITIES

Given the growing transnational nature of corruption, the UN Convention against Corruption was adopted to increase the efficiency of the international anti-corruption cooperation. Azerbaijan acceded to the UNCAC in 2005.
In order to consolidate international efforts in this field and coordinate activities of anti-corruption agencies all over the world, the Peoples Republic of China following the UN support, has initiated establishment of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities. Azerbaijan, attaching utmost importance to the fight against corruption has upheld this initiative.
 The Association held its first annual conference and general meeting in Beijing on 22-26 October.
The event was attended by about 1000 representatives from 137 countries, including justice and interior ministers, general prosecutors of numerous countries as well as leaders of elevated international organizations. Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov headed Azerbaijani delegation which composed of officials of Justice and Interior Ministries as well as General Prosecutors Office.
The conference was opened by the President of the Peoples Republic of China Hu Jintao and UN under-secretary-general, Director of the UN Vienna Office Antonio Maria Kosta, who spoke of utmost importance of the newly established Association.

Azerbaijani justice minister Fikrat Mammadov was one of the keynote rapporteurs at the Conference. He addressed the issue of implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption and its challenges. Minister also thoroughly described achievements in combating corruption in Azerbaijan, progressive reforms carried out and concrete results reached thereafter. The Minister draw attention of participants to the Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan which has resulted in occupation of 20 percent of the countrys territory and 1 million flow of refugees and internally displaced persons.
The Russian and English versions of the speech, which was welcomed by the plenary, were distributed among participants as well as were specific documents highlighting functioning of the State Anti-Corruption Commission and Anti-Corruption Department with the Prosecutor General.

Azerbaijani delegation also contributed to the development of the Draft Declaration of the Conference.
During the General Meeting elections were held to fill out leading positions of the IAACA such as President, Vice-Presidents, Secretary General and Executive Committee members. Prosecutor General of China Jia Chunwang has been elected the IAACA president, whereas Azerbaijani justice minister Fikrat Mammadov one of the vice-presidents.
During the Conference top leaders of China met with Heads of delegations and newly elected leadership of the IAACA and took a joint picture.
