CEDAW MEMBER MEETS DEPUTY JUSTICE MINISTER TO DISCUSS RIGHTS OF WOMEN

Visiting member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Navamanee Ratna Patten met with Deputy Justice Minister Togrul Musayev.
Deputy Minister told of the gender policy in Azerbaijan, saying a special state program had been adopted.
He noted President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues national leader Heydar Aliyev`s policy to safeguard women`s rights and enhance the role of women in the government. Musayev said there is a solid legal basis for applying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in the national legislation.
Musayev noted women constitute 54% of refugees and IDPs who were forced from their homes by the Armenian occupation.
Patten praised Azerbaijan government`s efforts to implement gender policy in the country, adding it is going to help enhance women`s activity. The visitor hailed adoption of the law on Gender Equality and voiced her confidence that the law on domestic violence will also be enacted.
She highly assessed the fact that the government of Azerbaijan had already submitted the report on elimination of discrimination against women unlike Armenia.
